Red Tide is a common name for a phenomenon also known as an algal bloom - large concentrations of microorganisms, an event in which estarine, marine, or fresh water algae accumulate rapidly in the water column and results in discoloration of the surface water. It is usually found in coastal areas.

These algae, more specifically phyto plankton, are single-celled protests, plant-like organisms that can from dense, visible patches near the water's surface. Certain species of phyto plankton, such as Dinoflagelate, contain photosynthetic pigments that vary in color from green to brown to red.

When the algae are present in high concentrations, the water appears to be discolored or murky, varying in color from purple to almost pink, normally being red or green. Not all algal blooms are dense enough to cases water discoloration, and not all discolored waters associated with algal blooms are red.

Red Tide is a natural phenomenon not cased by human beings. When Temperature, salinity and nutrients reach certain levels, a massive increase in Karenia brevis algae occurs. No on knows the exact combination of factors that causes Red Tide, but some exports believe high temperatures combined with a lack of wind and rainfall are usually at the root of Red Tide blooms. there are no known ways that humans can control it, but may scientists around the world are studying Red Tide at present.
